What a great time to be an elder
This is the spirit I hope to embody here among you and in my local community.
Nathan is a new friend and inspiration. For example, he lives near NYC so I asked him to help me find those good souls who visit the shut ins like my sister. He visited her himself, reporting:
“It was a very luminous experience, I felt right away that we were connecting on a heart level. She's very lucid, in spite of sometimes repeating some questions. All the same her wisdom and light shines through”
A reminder that people in pain are not only a problem to be solved but a being to behold.

For some (like me), the worst case scenario landed in DC and in our fire ravaged places, but there’s a peace in that. I’ve known this was coming, and it pulled me into a spirit of war, but now, we build in the places that have been torn apart, and really really “build everything forward.”
These times are an opportunity for elders to be relevant, not by getting out ahead but by putting wind in the sails of everything and everyone life-affirming, kind, inclusive, creative, and half our age. It’s tough to be a young person fledging into adulthood with jobs, family, homes and enough leisure to enjoy it all (like we had).
How can we make life better for those who will live a lot longer, and have to figure out how to thrive in the spaces in between?
How can I be relevant to building a beautiful world, now?
Yes, the unraveling is going to be so painful, but in the ashes…
You write so beautifully, Vicki. I think you and I both find meaning in mentoring and supporting the young people. I feel lucky to have communities of young people who want to listen and want to be heard. There is so much talent emerging from the 40-and 50-somethings. And I feel for all of the younger generations. Their lives will be so much different than ours.
